Virtual Field Work
Subscription to Google Earth Pro enables access to high resolution and very high resolution imagery over most of the world. Where very high resolution imagery is available over areas of good exposure some remote structural mapping or "Virtual Field Work" can be carried out. The example here shows an oblique view of some periclinal folding in the foreland of a thrust / fold belt. The 3-D view and easting, northing and elevation cursor coordinates of the surface allow identification and measurement of dipping bedding planes in the stratigraphic sequence. Accurate strike and dip symbols can be added to the geological interpretation map in GIS using this method.
