Remote Sensing Image Geological Interpretation

Most areas of the world are covered by regional remote sensing datasets that are free to download or inexpensive. Large areas can be covered at very little cost compared with the expenses incurred as soon as field teams are mobilised. It makes sense to maximise the amount of information you can acquire quickly and inexpensively for decision making. The example illustrated here shows LANDSAT and ASTER DEM data that have been processed and interpreted in GIS by MMSL to produce a regional geological interpretation map. In this case the remote sensing derived geological mapping was used to identify stratigraphy, structure and erosion level in order to identify the most prospective blocks for hydrocarbon exploration.
